Usually a fire pump set will pump cold water, from a large holding tank. The fire set is activated through a drop in pressure in the system, and will continue to run until the correct pressure is met again.
The main purpose of a fire pump set is to supply large volumes of water to a building in the event of a fire. These are commonly found in high density housing accommodation, Prisons, Hospitals, Manufacturing sites or high hazardous areas. There are different hazardous categories in the UK, that is defined by a number of criteria and given a hazard category.
The standard categories in the UK are:
OH1
Large schools, offices, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, libraries, dairies, cement works, sheet metal producers and abattoirs.
OH2
Museums, bakeries, breweries, photographic labs and car workshops.
OH3
Shopping centres, supermarkets, industrial processes and buildings with a highly combustible load.
HH
High hazard applications are storage, distribution facilities, areas where chemicals exist and high rise buildings
